WSU Defeats Arizona For The First Time In Program's History

April 7, 2001

LEWISTON, Ida. - Although bad weather forced the match to be moved to Lewiston, Washington State's No. 30 women's tennis team handed the No. 49 Wildcats of Arizona their second loss of the weekend. The Cougars defeated the Wildcats 4-3, Saturday, in a dual hosted by WSU at the Lewis Clark State College (LCSC) Tennis Center in Lewiston. The matched marked the first time the Cougars have defeated the Wildcats in the program's history.

Senior Ana Moura and freshman Stacy McKenna, currently No. 48, stepped up to defeat Arizona's Michelle Gough and Sophie Regnier 8-6 at the No. 1 doubles position. The No. 49 duo of team captain Tamara Filipovic and junior Erica Perkins also defeated the Wildcats' No. 39 Laresa Marino and Debbie Larocque, at the No. 2 position giving WSU the doubles point, and setting the tone for the rest of the match.

The Cougars went on to pick up three singles victories, thus sealing the victory.

Perkins, No. 34, defeated Arizona's Larocque 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 1 position. McKenna came up with another huge win for the Cougars, as she defeated the Wildcat's Marino 6-2, 6-1 at the No 2 position. Freshman Lorena Arias clinched the victory for the Cougars as she easily downed Arizona's Joanna Buczkowska 6-1, 6-0.'I think this is a huge win for our program,' head coach Cari Groce said. 'There has always been a big gap between our team and the South. I think it says a lot for our program when we can step up and beat these teams that have traditionally been very good. The team wanted it badly, and we are extremely happy. '

The Cougars are now 10-6 overall, 3-5 in the Pac-10, while the Wildcats drop to 6-10 and 1-7 in conference play.

'It was definitely a battle of the minds,' Perkins said. 'We've been working really had at Sports Psychology, and I think it's really paid off, we were definitely the mentally stronger team. '

WSU will continue its home stretch as they host USC and UCLA, April 13 and 14, respectively. The matches will take place at 11:00 am and noon, respectively, on the Stadium Way Tennis Courts.
