Beavers Fall In Finale

April 8, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State fell short in its bid to sweep California in Pacific-10 baseball Sunday afternoon, losing the series finale 12-1 at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. OSU (21-13 overall, 5-4 Pacific-10) had taken the first two games of the series, the Beavers have won two of their three conference series this spring and have won 13 of their last 18 games.

'Any time you win a series in the Pac-10, you've got to feel good about it,' OSU coach Pat Casey said. 'But we need to find a way to play better on Sundays - especially at home, after we've won the first two games.'

Despite the loss, Oregon State maintained sole possession of third place in the Pac-10 standings. The Beavers host Portland in a non-conference game Tuesday at 3 p.m., then go to Stanford for a Pac-10 series next Thursday through Saturday.

On Sunday, OSU failed to cash in on a pair of early scoring chances against California (20-16, 6-6).

'We talk about pitching and playing defense all the time, and we didn't do a very good job of either one today,' Casey said. 'We also had some opportunities early to put some runs on the board, and that could have changed the momentum of the game. But we dug ourselves a hole and we never really threatened.'

In the first inning, the Beavers loaded the bases with two out against Cal starter Ryan Atkinson but Brian Barden flied out to deep centerfield to end the threat. The Golden Bears then took a 5-0 lead off OSU starter Mark McLemore in the top of the third inning, with the big inning capped by a three-run double by Clint Hoover.

The Beavers were on the verge of getting back in the game when they loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the third inning, but Andy Jarvis struck out and Barden flied out to left field. Cal made it 7-0 in the top of the fourth when Rob Meyer and Jeff Dragicevich homered off Beaver reliever Chris Wilkins.

OSU's only run came in the bottom of the fourth, when Curtis Davis reached on an error and scored on a groundout by Eric Stark.

Bryan Ingram stretched his hitting streak to 12 games for OSU, going 1-for-3. Stephen Copeland was 2-for-3 for the Beavers and Josh Carter was 2-for-4, Carter's fifth straight two-hit game. Oregon State finished with six hits, just the 11th time this season OSU has been held under 10 hits in a game.

For California, Dragicevich and Meyer were both 3-for-4 with homers, Hoover was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and Brian Horwitz was 2-for-5. David Cash earned the win in relief, going four innings and allowing one unearned run on two hits and no walks while striking out three.
