No. 7 Women's Crew Fourth At Crew Classic
April 8, 2001
The No. 7-ranked Cal women's varsity eight finished fourth behind highly ranked crews from USC, Washington and Virginia. The third-place finish came down to which crew was on the drive portion of the stroke and which was on the recovery as the margin was only .25 second margin between the Cavaliers and the Bears.
'Of course we would have like a higher placing,' said coach Dave O'Neill. 'However, our group has limited experience at the varsity level. When you look at the big picture, I can't be disappointed with how we stacked up against a number of veteran crews.'
Washington took the lead off the line and had an open-water margin on Cal, USC and Virginia. As the boats approached the 1000, USC began to push and Virginia pulled even with the Bears. As Cal battled for third, USC charged back and made up a large deficit before edging the Huskies in the last two strokes.
In the Women's Collegiate Novice event, Cal got off the line with the pack, but Washington and Washington State established the early lead. The Cougars were a half-length down on the Huskies at the 750-meter mark, but that was as close as they got as Washington pushed through the finish line. Cal had established itself in third, but Virginia put on a charge in the second thousands and the crews approached the line bow ball to bow ball. The Bears edged the Cavaliers at the line by .14 seconds to take third.
After just missing out on the grand final in qualifying Saturday, the Cal women's JV eight rebounded on Sunday to win the petite final and finish with an overall seventh place. Cal and Notre Dame established themselves early in the race before the Bears took control eventually defeating the Fighting Irish by six seconds. Texas finished third in the race.
