OSU Places Three Golfers In Top 25 As Women's Golf Finishes 12th At ASU

April 8, 2001

TEMPE, Ariz. - - The Oregon State women's golf team placed three golfers in the top 25 of the Ping/Arizona State Invitational en route to a 12th-place finish with a score of 916 at the par 72 Karsten Golf Course on the campus of Arizona State University.

USC won the team competition by four strokes over host Arizona State with a score of 899, while Stanford's Stephanie Keever took medalist honors with an even-par 216.

For the second time this year, the Beavers had three golfers finish in the top 25, as Ashlei Pendleton tied for 12th, while Stacie Ferguson and Carina Olsson tied for 22nd.

Pendleton began Sunday's final round in third place and played consistently but for the last few holes, which cost her a higher finish. Pendlton's 12th place is still the second-highest individual finish for the Beavers this year, and her three-round total of 222 is a team-low.

Ferguson fired a 73 Sunday to secure her second consecutive top 25 finish. The sophomore shot 225 for the tournament after two rounds of 76 to open the event.

Olsson matched Ferguson's 225, shooting 73-76-76. The senior now has three top-25 finishes this year.

A few holes in each round got away from the Beavers, which is what let them slip from a sixth-place start after the opening round to their 12th-place finish. OSU had 30 birdies for the tournament, compared to tournament champion USC's 31.

'We had a lot of big holes this weekend,' OSU coach Rise Lakowske said. 'We've got to eliminate those and cut down on our mistakes. We're going to have to work harder on our course-management skills between now and Pac-10s. We made some poor choices today.

'There were still some bright spots - Ashlei's 12th-place finish and placing three golfers in the top 25 for instance. This was also the best field we've played against all year.'

Bridget Bieth and Laura Skinner had identical tournaments, as each went 82-81-81 to tie for 74th at 244.

Marylyn Brand shot 245 to tie for 76th while playing as an individual.

OSU has two weeks to prepare for the Pacific-10 Championships, which run April 23-25. The championship will be played on familiar territory for the Beavers, as Arizona State hosts the event at the Karsten Golf Course.
