April 8, 2001
LOS ANGELES - The top-ranked UCLA softball team earned their third Pac-10 victory on Sunday afternoon at Easton Stadium, defeating No. 2 Arizona by a 3-0 margin. With the victory, the Bruins improve to 40-3 (3-3 Pac-10), while the Wildcats fall to 39-4 (3-2 Pac-10).
The Bruins put their first run up in the bottom of the first inning, when Amanda Freed led off with a walk, advanced to second on a groundout by shortstop Natasha Watley, was wild pitched to third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bruin catcher Stacey Nuveman. Two more runs would come across in the fifth inning on a two-out bases loaded double by Courtney Dale.
Bruin freshman pitcher Keira Goerl struck out eight and walked one, scattering four hits and holding the Wildcats scoreless. Arizona did not advance a runner past second base in the game.
UCLA returns to action next Friday, April 13, with a 2 pm first pitch against No. 14 Washington. The Bruins will then finish off their Easter weekend schedule with a single game against the Huskies at 2 pm on Saturday. Saturday's game will be broadcast live on www.uclabruins.com.
