April 8, 2001
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - - The Oregon State women's crew wrapped up its weekend at the San Diego Crew Classic with a fourth-place finish in the varsity eight Petite Final (places 8-14) on Sunday with a time of 7:21.86. Washington State won the Petite Final in 7:10.22.
The JV eight raced in the Grand Final (places 1-7) and took sixth, as they crossed the line just behind Clemson in 7:20.16. Washington and Virginia battled it out for first, as Washington prevailed in 7:05.73.
OSU's novice eight posted a time of 7:19.69 to beat five other boats and claim the win in the novice Petite Final.
'We didn't race as well as we'd hoped to,' OSU coach Charlie Owen said. 'It was a tough day today, and there are some things we need to work on, so we'll be looking to improve next week (when OSU races in Dexter, Ore., in the Covered Bridge Regatta on Saturday).
'The varsity eight tried to come back after the crab yesterday (a stuck oar brought the boat to a halt), but we still didn't race as efficiently as we should. We were competitive, but we just didn't row consistently.'
