Women's Crew Turns In Impressive Performances At San Diego Classic

April 9, 2001

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Stanford Women's Crew team participated in the 28th annual San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday and Sunday.

Heats for the races were held on Saturday under incredibly difficult conditions with winds building to 25 miles per hour. The varsity boat faced five ranked crews in their heat. The boat barely got off the starting line when they lost their steering for 250 meters. After regaining control of the rudder the Cardinal fought hard but they missed the qualifying places for the Grand final. At the end of the race the boat protested the race, to no avail, after they discovered seaweed in the rudder which caused their steering failure. The second varsity qualified in the petite final and the novice raced into the Grand final.

In the finals on Sunday all boats greatly improved over previous year's performances with the varsity placing second in the petite (9th overall out of 35 varsity entries), the second varsity finished 12th out of 20 entries and the novice were 5th out of 21 entries.

The Cardinal hosts #6 California Saturday at Redwood Shores starting at 9:00 am.
