OSU Names Johnson, Bruch Athletes Of The Week
April 10, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. -
Pitcher Thad Johnson and gymnast Marissa Bruch have been named Oregon State's Athletes of the Week for their performances in competition during the week of April 2-8, it was announced Tuesday.
Johnson, a senior right-hander from Santa Rosa, CA, pitched the Beavers to a 6-5 victory over California last Friday at Goss Stadium in Corvallis. Johnson improved his record to 4-4 with a complete game victory. He struck out 14, the most by an Oregon State pitcher since 1998, allowed eight hits and did not walk a batter.
It was Johnson's third complete game of the season.
Bruch, a senior from Portland, came up with a pair of top 10 performances at the NCAA West Regionals in Los Angeles last week to help the Beavers earn a repeat trip to the NCAA Championships. The senior scored a 9.80 on beam and floor to place ninth on both events.
Her floor score was the best on the team, and her beam score was the team's third-best mark on that event. She's scored a 9.80 or better on both events at the last four meets and five times overall this season. Marissa has scored a 9.80 or better on beam seven times and on floor eight times this season.
