April 10, 2001

BERKELEY, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford University women's tennis team improved to 20-0 on the season, and 7-0 in the Pacific-10 Conference, with a 6-1 win over host California (13-3, 3-2) on Tuesday afternoon in Berkeley. The Cardinal, which snapped the Golden Bears' nine-match winning streak with the victory, has lost one point or fewer in 19 of its 20 victories.

Stanford first captured the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. Top-ranked Lauren Barnikow and Lauren Kalvaria prevailed at No. 1 to improve to 29-3, while second-ranked Laura Granville and Gabriela Lastra upped their mark to 29-2 with a win at No. 2.

The Cardinal then closed out its arch-rival by winning five of the six singles matches, including four in straight sets. Stanford won each of the top three matches in straight sets, and now owns a combined dual record of 54-3 in the top three spots in the order. Defending NCAA Singles Champion Granville won her 33rd match in 34 tries by defeating Anita Kurimay 7-5, 7-6, while the seventh-ranked Kalvaria and 20th-ranked Lastra also won in straight sets. Kalvaria is now 26-3, while Lastra is 29-5.

The Cardinal continues its quest for an undefeated regular season when it visits #14 Arizona State on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and #49 Arizona on Saturday at noon.
