No. 6 Stanford Men Take Down No. 27 Cal, 5-2
April 10, 2001
PALO ALTO, CA - The sixth-ranked Stanford University men's tennis team knocked off arch-rival California, 5-2, Tuesday night at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in the first-ever regular season night tennis match on The Farm. The Cardinal, which has won 10 in a row, is 16-1 overall and 5-0 in the Pac-10, while the No. 27-ranked Golden Bears dropped to 10-7 and 2-3.
Stanford used the same formula for success that it has throughout the long winning streak: strong doubles play and impressive performances at the top of the singles line-up. The Cardinal, which has four doubles teams ranked among the top 41 in the country, lost a combined total of only eight games in the three matches. At No. 1, the No. 21-ranked duo of K.J. Hippensteel and Alex Kim won their fourth straight, and seventh in their last eight, by overpowering Cal's John Paul Fruttero and Robert Kowalczyk, 8-2.
Hippensteel and Kim also continued their torrid performances in singles play. The second-ranked (and defending NCAA Singles Champion) Kim won his 18th match in 20 tries this season by defeating the 28th-ranked Fruttero, 6-3, 6-1. The 22nd-ranked Hippensteel, meanwhile, extended his personal winning streak to 14 matches by outlasting Kowalczyk 6-3, 7-6.
The Bears only two wins came at No. 3 and 4 where Scott Kintz defeated No. 33-ranked David Martin in a tough three-set battle, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, while at No. 4, sophomore Ben Miles defeated No. 77-ranked Ryan Haviland in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
