Beavers Lose Pitching Duel

April 12, 2001

STANFORD, Calif. - Oregon State was beaten by No. 1-ranked Stanford 4-1 in the opening game of their Pacific-10 baseball series Thursday evening at Sunken Diamond. OSU (21-14 overall, 5-5 Pacific-10) got a seven-hitter from pitcher Thad Johnson, as the senior righthander threw his second straight complete game.

The Beavers, who have won 13 of their last 19 games, and Cardinal (29-7, 8-2) meet again Friday at 6 p.m. and conclude their series Saturday at 1 p.m. Both games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Friday, Johnson was outdueled by Stanford righthander Jeremy Guthrie, who pitched five-hit ball over eight innings and struck out a career-high 11. Johnson walked two and struck out six as his record went to 4-5, Guthrie improved to 8-1.

'Thad pitched great,' OSU coach Pat Casey said. 'He did an outstanding job against a club that is very, very good. I'm amazed that with as many players as Stanford lost after last season (when the Cardinal reached the College World Series final), that they've been able to reload and recover that quickly.'

Stanford picked up a pair of runs on a walk, two hits and two errors in the second inning to go up 2-0. Ryan Garko drove in both runs with a sharp groundball double just inside third base with none out and he advanced to third on an error, Johnson then pitched out of the jam with no further damage.

The Beavers didn't come up with their first hit off Guthrie until the top of the fifth inning, when Brian Barden singled through the right side to lead off the frame. He was caught stealing before Curtis Davis grounded another single through the right side later in the inning.

'When you're playing the No. 1-ranked team in the country and they've got one of the top four or five guys in the country on the mound, you've got to be creative in finding ways to get on base,' Casey said. 'And we just couldn't get ourselves on base ... they're a tremendous club, and to go nose-to-nose with them the way we want to, you've got to be at the top of your game.'

Stanford scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth after Mario Garza led off with a single and Arik Van Zandt doubled. Sam Fuld singled home one run and Chris O'Riordan drove in another with a groundout.

Oregon State finally broke through in the top of the seventh. Josh Carter singled to left and Barden singled to center to start the inning. Andy Jarvis then hit a soft line drive to short that struck Carter, he was called out, Jarvis was credited with a single and Barden advanced to second.

Davis then grounded out to second to advance the runners, and Guthrie was called for a balk that scored Barden and moved Jarvis to third. Guthrie struck out Zach Gordon, though, to end the inning with the Cardinal still on top 4-1.

Gordon had entered the game at shortstop in the bottom of the second inning after Will Hudson sprained an ankle, Hudson is questionable for the rest of the series.

OSU catcher Bryan Ingram had his hitting streak end at 12 games as he went 0-for-4. Carter extended his hitting streak to six games and Barden was 2-for-3 for Oregon State, which kept a share of third place in the Paacific-10.
