Freshman Step Up for Cougars
April 13, 2001
LEWISTON, Idaho - Without the help of No. 35 Erica Perkins, the WSU women's tennis team relied on the youthful enthusiasm of its freshman in its dual against the Women of Troy. The Trojans narrowly defeated the Cougars 4-3, in a dual hosted by the Cougars at the LCSC Tennis Center.
Perkins, who had to sit out this match due to a match allotment, will return to action tomorrow.
'We had decided earlier in the season that Erica would sit this match out,' head coach Cari Groce said. 'You are only allowed to play in 20 collegiate matches each season, and because Erica was invited to the Rolex, she had to sit out of one match during the season. I think this gave the rest of the team a chance to show what they can do.'
The Cougars were off to a quick start as they picked up two doubles victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Freshman Stacy McKenna and senior Ana Moura upset USC's No. 12 ranked duo of Petersen and Tiffany Brymer 9-7. Senior Tamara Filipovic and freshman Zorana Roganovic, who stepped in for Perkins, also upset the No. 43 ranked Trojan tandem of Anita Loyala and Melissa Esmero 8-0. This was Roganovic's first appearance in the doubles line-up of the spring season.
The Cougars then went on to win two of the six singles matches, including a major upset at the No. 1 position. McKenna, making her first appearance of the season at the No. 1 position, upset USC's No. 13 Jewel Petersen 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Lorena Arias also picked up a victory for the Cougars as she battled USC's Bernadette Bayani in a three-set match, which was decided in a 9-7 tiebreaker. Arias defeated Bayani 6-7, 6-1, 7-6 (7). Seniors Ana Moura and Tamara Filipovic lost two close three-set matches at the No. 2 and 4 positions, respectively.
'I was very pleased with the way the team played,' Groce said. 'I think Stacy has proven that she is going to be one of the top players in the years to come. Zorana stepped up and played great doubles with Tamara. I was really pleased with the overall match.'
The Cougars will return to action tomorrow as they face the No. 38 Bruins of UCLA. The match is scheduled for noon at the Stadium Way Tennis Courts, weather permitting. In the case of bad weather, the match will be moved to the LCSC Tennis Center in Lewiston.
