April 13, 2001

The Oregon men's golf team finished day one at ASU's Thunderbird Invitational in 18th place (291-297--588) held on the Karstan Courses in Tempe, Arizona. The Ducks faced a stiff field of competition with eight out of the 21 competing teams ranked among the top-25. After a 17-stroke win last week at the Western Intercollegiate, the Ducks benchmarked their first appearance in MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings` top-25 this season, coming in at No. 21. The other eight ranked teams in the Thunderbird Invitational include host Arizona State (No. 8), ninth-ranked USC, No. 11 New Mexico, No. 12 Oklahoma, No. 14 Oklahoma State, No. 16 Brigham Young, and No. 22 Arizona.

After two rounds, Matt Genovese led the Oregon squad shooting an even-par in both rounds (72-72--142) to put him in a tie for 42nd. Oregon senior Aaron Byers trailed Genovese by three strokes (75-72--147), finishing in a tie for 69th place, while teammates John Ellis (74-75--149), Chris Carnahan (73-78--151) and Mike Sica (72-80-152) rounded out Oregon's 588-stroke combined team score.

Leading the ASU-Thunderbird Invitational was Texas, who compiled a 22-below-par score of 554 after shooting the lowest round of the day in round two (270). The Southern California Trojans, who trailed the Longhorns by only one point after round one, slid five strokes behind after round two, finishing day one in second place (559). Individually, USC's Kevin Stadler took the early lead with a 68-67--135 series, with teammate Nick Jones and Pepperdine's Jason Allred both trailing by only one stroke.

The Ducks will continue action on Saturday when the ASU-Thunderbird Invitational concludes.
