Nicholson's Streak Ends At Four

April 13, 2001

STANFORD, Calif. - No. 1-ranked Stanford broke open a pitcher's duel in the late innings to beat Oregon State 8-1 in Pacific-10 baseball Friday evening at Sunken Diamond. OSU (21-15 overall, 5-6 Pacific-10) was tied with the Cardinal (30-7, 9-2) through five innings before Stanford pulled away.

The Beavers and Cardinal conclude their series Saturday at 1 p.m., and the game can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340). Oregon State returns home for a non-league game against Concordia on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before hosting Washington State in a Pac-10 series next Friday through Sunday.

On Friday, OSU lefthander Scott Nicholson had his streak of four straight complete-game wins come to an end. After blanking Stanford on three hits through four innings, Nicholson gave up eight runs on 13 hits over his final 3 2/3 innings.

'I think Scott got frustrated a bit because he wasn't getting some corners (of the strike zone),' OSU coach Pat Casey said. 'I thought he pitched plenty good enough for us to win. He got behind a couple hitters, and Stanford is an outstanding club. They don't have a single weakness.

'Usually, you can come up with a game plan on how to attack somebody, but they can hit, they can pitch ... they're as good a college team as I've ever seen. We've just got to come out Saturday and play to win and expect to win.'

The Beavers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning off unbeaten Stanford righthander Jeff Bruksch. Brian Barden grounded a single through the left side and Curtis Davis was hit by a pitch, then both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Andy Jarvis grounded out to first base to score Barden and move Davis to third, but Bruksch got Zach Gordon to pop out and Stephen Copeland to fly out to end the inning.

Gordon started at shortstop in place of Will Hudson, who was sidelined by a sprained ankle. Hudson is questionable for Saturday's game.

Nicholson held the lead through four innings, but Ryan Garko led off the fifth inning with a double and went to third on Brian Hall's flyout to center. Andy Topham's groundball single to left drove in Garko to make it 1-1, and Arik Van Zandt kept the threat going with another single.

Sam Fuld then flied to deep centerfield, where OSU's Eric Stark made an over-the-shoulder catch to take away an extra-base hit. Topham tagged up and went to third, but VanZandt was thrown out trying to take second to end the inning with the game still tied.

The Beavers tried to answer immediately, as Stark lofted a single to left-center and went to second on Bryan Ingram's groundout. Chris Biles then lined the ball back up the middle but Bruksch was able to make the grab, and his throw to second nipped Stark to complete an inning-ending double play.

Stanford then came up with what proved to be the winning runs in a three-run sixth inning. The big hits were Carlos Quentin's run-scoring triple to center that ticked off Stark's glove and Garko's three-run homer when he swung away at a three-ball, no-strike pitch.

The Cardinal added two more runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to put the game away. Bruksch finished with a five-hitter, walking none and striking out eight.

For OSU, Barden was 2-for-3 but Josh Carter saw his hitting streak end at six games. The Beavers go into the series finale having won 13 of their last 20 games.
