Top-Ranked UCLA Defeats Washington, 6-1

Los Angeles, CA -- The top-ranked UCLA Bruins tennis defeated the No. 13 Washington Huskies, 6-1 this afternoon at the LA Tennis Center. UCLA improves to 18-1 (5-1 Pac-10), while Washington falls to 17-6 overall (2-3 Pac-10) with the setback.
The No. 13 Huskies gave the Bruins quite a fight in doubles as the match point was decided by a tie-breaker. The tandem of Marcin Matkowski and Travis Rettenmaier came back from being down a break (7-6) to win the match 9-8(5) on court No. 1 to claim the doubles point. The pair of Erfan Djahangiri and Lassi Ketola won the other doubles match, downing Matt Hanlin and Andrej Bizjak, 8-4 on court No. 3.
UCLA showed its dominance in singles though as the Bruins claimed five of six matches. Matkowski showed similar success in singles as he clinched the victory for the Bruins, defeating Andrew Bizjak, 6-1, 6-4 on court No. 2. The Huskies lone point of the match came at No. 3 as Tobias Clemens fell Jeremy Berman, 6-2, 6-2 on court No. 3.
UCLA will host its final match of the regular season tomorrow (Apr. 14) in match against Oregon at the LA Tennis Center at 1:30 pm. Saturday's match will be Senior Day with seniors Jean-Noel Grinda and Chris Sands being honored before the match.
