#13 Softball Blanked By #1 UCLA, 4-0
April 14, 2001
LOS ANGELES - UCLA Stacey Nuveman had a three-run home run and an RBI double as the top-ranked Bruins defeated #13 Washington, 4-0, Sunday at Easton Stadium in Pac-10 softball action. With the loss, the Huskies fell to 27-16 and 3-5 in Pac-10, while the Bruins improved to 42-3 and 5-3 in conference play.
The Bruins scored what turned out to be the winning runs in the first inning when lead-off hitter pitcher Amanda Freed singled and then moved to second on a bunt single from shortstop Natasha Watley. After UW pitcher Shannon Walsh (Covina, Calif.) struck out third baseman Tairia Mims swinging, Nuveman hit her 14th home run of the season to left field.
UCLA added another run in the bottom of the third when Watley scored on a Nuveman double to left-center field.
Washington, meanwhile, struggled at the plate. Freshman Amanda Oleson (Agoura Hills, Calif.) singled in the top of the second, but was erased on a fielder's choice. The Huskies had another runner on base an inning later with one out, but Freed struck out freshman Rita Roach (Norwalk, Calif.) and Kelly Hauxhurst (Westminster, Calif.) to end the threat.
Washington's biggest threat came in the top of the seventh inning with runners at first and second and two out, but Freed once again got freshman Courtney Jeffries (Eugene, Calif.) to strikeout swinging to end the game.
Walsh took the loss to fall to 3-11 overall, pitching four innings and striking out three before giving way to freshman reliever Megan Owen (Spokane, Wash.) in the top of the fifth. Freed picked up the win for the Bruins, moving to 17-3 overall with 10 strikeouts.
The Huskies continue on the road next weekend for a single Pac-10 game at Oregon on Friday and single conference games at Oregon State on Saturday and Sunday.
