Beavs Fall To No. 1 Stanford In Baseball
April 14, 2001
STANFORD, Calif. - -
The Oregon State baseball team suffered a 22-5 setback at the hands of the nation's top team, the Stanford Cardinal, on Saturday afternoon in Pacific-10 baseball at Sunken Diamond as the Beavers dropped to 5-7 in the Pac-10 and 21-16 overall.
OSU was saddled with injuries, as three starters were relegated to watching from the dugout. Shortstop Will Hudson (ankle), Brian Barden (hip) who is an all-America candidate at third base, and catcher Bryan Ingram (unspecified ailment) all missed the action.
The Beavers trailed 10-0 after three innings before they got going in the top of the fourth. Curtis Davis started OSU's three-run inning off with a single up the middle, and then advanced to second on a Josh Carter single. One batter later, Andy Jarvis ripped a double down the left field line to move Davis across the plate and set up a Zach Gordon sacrifice bunt to bring in Carter from third. A wild pitch from Stanford' Mike Gosling allowed Jarvis, who advanced on the sacrifice, to score from third.
Stanford (31-7, 10-2) put an end to any thoughts of an OSU comeback in the home half of the fourth, as seven Cardinal players crossed the plate to give Stanford a comfortable 17-3 bulge.
OSU brought in another run in the sixth, when Carter drilled a double down the left field line for his second hit of the day. Two batters later, Gordon looped a two-out single to right center to bring Carter in.
OSU's final run came in the seventh inning on the strength of a Pat Stevens RBI single that brought in Josh Howard from second.
The game was called after the Beavers half of the seventh, due to the ten-run rule.
All told, the Beavers had seven hits on the day, with Carter leading the way with a 2-for-3 performance, scoring two runs. Gordon had two RBI.
Mark McLemore took the loss for OSU and fell to 0-4, while Gosling (3-0) got the win for Stanford.
OSU hosts Concordia on Tuesday, April 17 at 3 p.m. in its next action, then takes on Northwest rival Washington State this weekend in a three-game series at Goss Stadium beginning Friday, April 20 at 3 p.m.
