Mackenzie Shoots Another 68 to Finish 6th at ASU

April 14, 2001

Tempe, AZ - Washington freshman Brock Mackenzie shot his second consecutive round of 68 to finish in a five-way tie for sixth place at Arizona State's Thunderbird/Savane Invitational. The Huskies shot their best round of the tournament, 285, to move into 15th place in the final standings. Washington's final score was 871.

Arizona State rallied to win the tournament after recording the second-best score in the event's history. The Sun Devils shot a 25-under 839 to beat Texas by six strokes. ASU entered the day nine shots back of the fourth-ranked Longhorns, but shot a 12-under 276 to post the win. ASU's 25-under 839 (283-280-276) is the second-best score in the tournament's 29-year history, as only the Sun Devils in 1999 fared better with a 30-under, and that was aided by Jeff Quinney's Karsten Course record 62 on the final day.

Oklahoma State's Anders Hultman won the tournament with a 10-under par score of 206 that included rounds of 69, 68 and 69.

Mackenzie's final two rounds were the best final 36-hole score during the tournament. Only USC's Hunter Mahan, who also shot 68, 68 during the final two rounds, equaled Mackenzie's final scores. The sixth-place finish was the best during Mackenzie's first year as a Husky. Prior to the ASU tournament, Mackenzie had shot 68 just once this season.

Washington's other scorers included a 217 by John Robertson to finish tied for 54th, 221 by Corey Prugh to tie for 76, 226 by Conner Robbins to tie for 95th and 233 by Gordy Scutt to tie for 105.

The Huskies play their final regular-season tournament April 21-22 at the Stanford Invitational.
