April 16, 2001
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Jessica Mendoza went 6-for-8 as the No. 3 Stanford softball team swept Cal Poly in a non-conference doubleheader on Monday night at Bob Janssen Field. Stanford took the first game 2-1 and came from behind in the second to win 5-3. The Cardinal is now 40-5-1 while the Mustangs fall to 17-25.
In Game 1, the Mustangs took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a single from Christie Wells and another base hit from Kasey Poet. But Cal Poly wouldn't get another hit until the sixth inning.
Stanford scored its only two runs of the game in the fourth inning. Jenni Shideler led off the inning with a double to the left centerfield gap. She advanced to third on an error by Cal Poly's center fielder but was forced out at home with Ramona Shelburne's fielder's choice.
Maureen LeCocq then reached on an error by the shortstop and Robin Walker singled to load the bases. Mendoza's grounder to first base scored LeCocq, and Shelburne scored when Sarah Beeson's grounder to short was missed. Three Cal Poly errors led to both of Stanford's unearned runs.
In the circle, LeCocq gave up three hits while striking out four and walking one. At one point, she retired 12 Mustangs in a row. With the win, she improves to 12-4 and picked up her eighth complete game of the year.
The Cardinal stranded 12 runners in the game, including two in four of the last five innings. Mendoza went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
In Game 2, the Cardinal came from behind in the top of the seventh. The Mustangs led 2-1 as late as the sixth inning before Stanford tied it in the sixth and took the lead for the first time in the seventh.
Mendoza's two-run double off the left centerfield wall in the seventh gave the Cardinal a 4-2 lead, breaking the tie. Michelle Thiry started the rally with a double and moved to third on Walker's single. Mendoza drove them both in, and Beeson followed with a single up the middle to score Mendoza for Stanford's final run.
Cal Poly took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. A pair of singles from the Mustangs' No. 2 and 3 hitters started the rally. Kasey Poet then reached on a fielder's choice to advance the runners and a throwing error from Stanford's catcher allowed the first Cal Poly run. The Mustangs scored their second run on a wild pitch.
Stanford cut the lead to 2-1 in the third inning when Mendoza hit a two-out double to right field and Beeson followed with a single up the middle.
The Cardinal trailed by a run until the sixth inning. Beeson led off with a double to the left center field gap. Jessica Draemel pinch ran for Beeson and advanced to third on Kira Ching's ground out. Then Jessica Allister's sacrifice bunt scored Draemel to tie the game at 2-2.
Tori Nyberg pitched the first four innings, giving up two runs on three hits. Jaime Forman-Lau started the fifth inning and went the final three innings to earn the win. She scattered just two hits and gave up one run (a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh). Forman-Lau improves to 3-0.
Stanford collected 11 hits in the game (20 on the day). Beeson had a 4-for-4 outing in the second game with a double and two RBI while Mendoza went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.
The Cardinal returns to Pacific-10 Conference play on Friday when it travels to No. 2 Arizona. On Saturday and Sunday, Stanford takes on No. 8 Arizona State in Tempe.
