Beavers Thump Concordia 11-2

April 17, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Curtis Davis homered, drove in three runs and tied Oregon State's season record for being hit by pitch Tuesday afternoon as the Beavers beat Concordia 11-2 in non-league baseball at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. OSU (22-16 overall, 5-7 Pacific-10) also got two hits and a home run from Paul Richie as it won for the 14th time in is last 22 games.

Oregon State returns to Pacific-10 play against Washington State this weekend, meeting the Cougars on Friday at 3 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at noon. The games Saturday and Sunday can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Tuesday against Concordia (11-21-2, 8-12-1 Cascade Collegiate), the Beavers had 14 hits and pitchers Jed Mitchell, Ben Rowe, Mark McLemore and Stephen Copeland combined on an eight-hitter for the win.

'It was nice to get off 21,' said OSU coach Pat Casey, whose team had lost four straight after picking up its 21st victory of the season against California on April 7. 'We played good defense and we played solid all the way around. It was nice to have that infield out there.'

The Beaver quartet of third baseman Brian Barden, shortstop Will Hudson, second baseman Zach Gordon and first baseman Andy Jarvis started a game together for the first time since a March 25 win over Arizona State.

Davis, a senior designated hitter, was plunked for the 12th time this season to match the mark set by Stacey Ayers in 1991 and Ben Bertrand in 1997, it came in the first inning and forced in one of two Beaver runs in the frame.

OSU still led 2-0 going into the bottom of the third inning, when Barden led off with a single through the left side. Davis then jumped on the first pitch from Concordia starter Carlos Valdenegro and drove it high over the fence in left-centerfield to make it 4-0.

The homer was Davis' first of the season and he finished the day 2-for-3. He raised his batting average to .415 after entering the week fourth in the Pac-10 batting race.

Richie, a freshman catcher, led off the bottom of the fourth inning with the first homer of his Oregon State career, clearing the fence in left-centerfield. He added a run-scoring single in the sixth inning when OSU increased its lead to 7-2.

OSU used the midweek game to give several pitchers some work, and Mitchell earned the win for his first decision of the season. The sophomore lefthander went four innings, allowing 2 runs (2 earned) on three hits and two walks while striking out six.

Rowe and McLemore followed with two scoreless innings each before Copeland pitched the ninth. The Beaver pitchers combined to strike out 12 in the game.

Oregon State finished the scoring with four runs in the bottom of the eighth. With two out, the Beavers got consecutive run-scoring singles by Eric Stark, Hudson and Barden before Jason McBride doubled home the final run.

Stark, Hudson and Barden also had two hits each for OSU. Josh Carter doubled for OSU, the 37th double of his career, that ties him for second on the Beavers' list of career leaders with Drew Hedges (1997-2000).

Oregon State had at least 10 hits for the 24th time in its 38 games this season. The Beavers improved their home record for this spring to 13-5.

For Concordia, Jesse Harrington was 3-for-5 and Justin Krueger was 2-for-2. Beau Johnson drove in both the Cavaliers' runs with a fourth-inning single.
