PAC-10 PLAY HITS HALFWAY MARK THIS WEEKEND
Three teams are ranked in this week's Baseball America poll, including No. 1 STANFORD, No. 8 USC and No. 15 ARIZONA STATE. The Cardinal has held the top spot for six weeks in a row ... There are only three Conference series this week with CALIFORNIA headed to ARIZONA, WASHINGTON STATE at OREGON STATE and the Cardinal visiting the Trojans ...There are a host of midweek games and UCLA heads to Kansas State for a non-conference weekend series ... After the first four weekends of Conference play last year, here is how the standings looked: 1. ASU(11-4), STAN (11-4), 3. UCLA (8-4), 4. USC (8-7), 5. CAL (9-9), 6. OSU (5-7), 7. ARIZ (7-11), 8. ARIZONA (26-17 Overall, 6-6 Pac-10)Last Week: Texas A&M-Corpus Christi W 14-9, 19-7/7 inn, 13-0/7 inn This Week: at Grand Canyon, CAL
Arizona swept Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in their first non-conference series since mid-March ... Wildcat right fielder Shelley Duncan hit for the cycle in the second game of the series against the Islanders. He finished that game 5-for-5 with five runs scored and six RBI. Duncan followed teammate Matt Abram's direction, as he had hit for the cycle six days earlier. Duncan becomes the 11th Wildcat and 22nd Pac-10 player to accomplish the feat ... In the final game of the series, freshmen pitchers Chris Goodman and Jason Martinez combined to throw a three-hit shutout. It marked Arizona's second shutout and lowest opponent hit total this season ... Duncan launched his 19th home run of the season, and his sixth home run in five games in the shutout. He needs
only four more four-baggers this season to tie George Arias for the Wildcat's single-season record ... Duncan leads the league in home runs (19), slugging percentage (.722), RBI (58), total bases (122) and walks (28) ... Arizona leads the Pac-10 in runs scored (343), hits (495), RBI (304), triples (26) and total bases (740).

The Sun Devils ended a slump that saw them lose nine of their last 13 games, when they defeated the Cougars, 4-3 on Friday. ASU also picked up a final game victory and won its first Pac-10 series since the league opener at Cal ... Junior LHP Jon Switzer tied a career-high 13 strikeout performance on Thursday, but the Sun Devils fell 2-1 to the Cougars ... Junior RHP Andy Torres and freshman RHP Aaron Klusman were bright spots out of the bullpen. On Friday, Torres threw five shutout innings with seven strikeouts to pick up his team-leading ninth win of the season. Klusman recorded his first career win on Saturday, striking out a career-high 10 batters, while only giving up one run on five hits... Freshman utility player, Nick Walsh, picked up his third game-winning hit of the season in ASU's 4-3 win Friday. Walsh also came up with clutch hits in ASU victories over Cal State Fullerton and Cal ... ASU's 22 hits in Saturday's game upped the team's average seven points. The Sun Devils lead the league with a .337 batting average ... ASU also leads the Pac-10 in on-base percentage (.440), doubles (94), walks (197) and stolen bases (82) ... Freshman LF Rod Allen is tied for first place in batting average with senior C Casey Myers. Both are hitting at a .418 clip, good for second in the Conference ... Senior 3B Mike Lopez leads the league in doubles (16), while junior OF Mel Stocker leads the league in stolen bases (18).
CALIFORNIA (22-18 Overall, 7-8 Pac-10)Last Week: at San Jose State W 9-7, USC L 1-2, 3-5, W 5-4/10 inn This Week: at Saint Mary's, at ARIZ
For the fourth time this season, the Bears dropped the first two games of a Pac-10 series, only to come back with a victory in the final game ... With Cal's 1-0 loss in the first game and 5-4 win in the third game of the series, the Bears have been involved in 16 one-run contests this season, going 6-10 in those games ... Cal's 5-4 Saturday win marked the first time since Mar. 11 that the Bears did not score at least 10 runs in the final game of a series ... Cal got solid pitching from junior RHP Trevor Hutchinson, as he pitched eight innings giving up only one run on eight hits in the 1-0 loss. The Bears also shined defensively in the loss, turning three double plays and forcing the Trojans to strand eight runners on base ... Senior RHP Andrew Sproul also pitched well last week, earning the win at San Jose State. He struck out four batters, while giving up one unearned run on two hits in three innings. Sproul also participated in Cal's 5-4, 10-inning win over USC. He threw four innings with two hits, one run and a strikeout ... Junior 2B Carson White had a good series at the plate against USC and San Jose State. He went 7-for-15 (.467) with three doubles, a home run and four RBI. He is currently riding a nine-game hitting streak ... Cal is second in Conference pitching with a team ERA of 3.54. The Bears rank third in opposing batting average (.260).
OREGON STATE (21-16 Overall, 5-7 Pac-10)Last Week: Stanford L 1-4, 1-8, 5-22/7 inn This Week: Concordia, WSU
Oregon State was swept by No. 1 Stanford on a road trip that saw several injuries hamper the Beavers. In the final game of the series, starters SS Will Hudson, 3B Brian Barden and C Bryan Ingram all watched from the dugout, missing action due to various ailments ... Oregon State limited the Cardinal to scoring only four runs, but only came up with one run on their end. Senior RHP Thad Johnson allowed four runs, while scattering seven hits with six strikeouts in eight innings pitched. It was Johnson's second straight complete game ... In the second game of the series, senior lefty Scott Nicholson saw his string of four straight complete-game wins come to end, as the Beavers fell to the Cardinal, 8-1. The Beavers were tied with the Cardinal through five innings and Nicholson held Stanford to three hits through four innings, but then gave up eight runs on 13 hits over the final 3.2 innings ... The Beavers' bats were somewhat quiet against Stanford, but the team is still in second place in the Conference in hitting (.317). Oregon State leads the league with a .477 slugging percentage and 40 home runs ... The Beavers will look to rebound from last weekend's losses by hosting a midweek game against Concordia and a three-game series against Washington State.
STANFORD (31-7 Overall, 10-2 Pac-10)Last Week: OSU W 4-1, 8-1, 22-5/7 inn This Week: San Francisco, at USC
Stanford is riding a six-game winning streak and has won 17 of its last 19 games ... The Cardinal's sweep of Oregon State marks its fourth straight Pac-10 series win this year. Stanford now has won 17 consecutive regular season series and nine straight against Pac-10 opponents dating back to last season ... Stanford's 22-5, seven-inning victory over the Beavers on Sunday established several season-highs. The 22 runs scored were a season-high, junior 1B Arik VanZandt and freshman RF Carlos Quentin recorded new career-highs in RBI, driving in six and five runs respectively, the four hits apiece by freshmen Brian Hall and Sam Fuld set a career-high for Hall and tied a career-high for Fuld, and junior SS Scott Dragicevich scored four runs, equaling the most scored by a Cardinal in a game this season ... Stanford again got strong pitching performances from its No. 1 and 2 starters, Jeremy Guthrie and Jeff Bruksch. Guthrie struck out a career-high 11 batters, while giving up only one run on five hits in eight innings pitched. Bruksch threw his second complete game of the season, also allowing one run on five hits, with eight Ks ... The Cardinal leads the Conference in pitching with a 2.99 team ERA. They also lead in fielding percentage (.978), opposing batting average (.225), wins (31), saves (13), hits allowed (278) and runs allowed (125).
UCLA (24-12 Overall, 6-6 Pac-10)Last Week: WASH L 0-3, W 4-2, 11-3 This Week: Long Beach State, at Kansas State
The Bruins dropped the first game to the Huskies last weekend, but won the next two, to pick up their second Pac-10 series win of the season ... Junior RHP Josh Karp was solid in his outing, helping UCLA defeat Washington 4-2. Karp struck out a season-high 10 batters, while allowing just one run on five hits. Over three seasons, Karp has notched a 13-1 record in Pac-10 play. The lone loss came against Washington in 1999 and he has been undefeated in conference play over the last two seasons ... UCLA also got a strong pitching from senior RHP Paul Diaz, who picked up his second win of the week on Saturday. Diaz allowed two runs on five hits, while striking out five in 5.2 innings pitched ... Senior DH Brian Baron went 0-for-4 in the opening game of the series, but bounced back with 3-for-3 and 2-for-5 performances at the plate in games two and three. Baron also scored three runs and drove in two. He tops all batters in the Conference with a .500 batting average, .533 on-base percentage and 73 hits ... Several other Bruins contributed at the plate in UCLA's 11-3 win over Washington. Senior 1B Eric Reece went 3-for-4 with a double and home run, while sophomore RF Ben Francisco and junior LF John Campanella also notched multi-hit games. Francisco went 4-for-5 with three runs and Campanella went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in his fourth start of the season.
USC (26-13 Overall, 8-4 Pac-10)Last Week: at CAL W 1-0, 5-3, L 4-5/10 inn This Week: at UC Riverside, STAN
USC took two of three games at Cal last weekend. They missed recording the sweep after falling to the Bears, 5-4 in 10 innings in the final game of the series ... Junior RHP Mark Prior was stellar in his two-hit shutout of the Bears in the opening game. He also recorded 14 strikeouts for the second time this season. Prior earned his third Pac-10 Player of the Week honor this year for his efforts. He now stands at 10-1 on the year, with a 1.20 ERA. In 82 2/3 innings this season, Prior has allowed 47 hits and only six extra-base hits, while striking out 123 batters and giving up only 11 free passes. Opponents are batting at a .164 clip when facing him and he has allowed only two earned runs in his last 41 innings. He leads the Conference in opposing batting average, strikeouts and wins ... Freshman lefty Fraser Dizard also did well on the mound, earning his fifth save of the season. He tossed two scoreless innings in USC's 5-3 win on Saturday ...Senior LF Josh Persell set a record in Thursday's game when he was hit by a pitch for the 37th time. Persell was hit on a pitch by Cal's Trevor Hutchinson, breaking the USC career record of 36 held by Brett Jenkins (1989-91). Persell was hit again by another Hutchinson pitch later that game and yet again on Friday, bringing his career total to 39.
WASHINGTON (19-13 Overall, 3-9 Pac-10)Last Week: at UCLA W 3-0, L 2-4, 3-11 This Week: at Portland
Washington picked up a win in its first game against UCLA last weekend, bolstered by junior Shawn Kohn's solid pitching. Kohn led the Huskies to a 3-0 victory over the Bruins, giving up only four hits and one walk, while striking out six batters. The win marked the second consecutive shutout victory by Kohn. In his three career starts (vs. Cal, at Hilo, at UCLA), Kohn has worked 23 innings and has yet to allow an earned run. He owns a league-leading 0.97 ERA and is second in opposing batting average (.188) ... The win marked the 500th game of head coach Ken Knutson's career. His record stands at 304-198 ... Outfielders Jay Garthwaite and Tyler Davidson both hit .364 (4-for-11) on the weekend. Garthwaite also scored and drove in a run, while adding a double and two stolen bases. Davidson knocked a homer out in the final game and finished the series with one run scored and four RBI ... Washington is second in the Conference behind Stanford in giving up the least amount of hits (307) and tied with the Cardinal for least amount of walks issued (123). The Huskies have also fielded the most double plays of any Conference team this season (46) ... Washington plays a midweek two-game series with Portland and is off this weekend. The team will host the All-Century Banquet, honoring 58 players and three coaches that will be named the Husky Baseball All-Century Team.
WASHINGTON STATE (13-24 Overall, 5-7 Pac-10)Last Week: at Lewis-Clark State L 7-10, Arizona State W 2-1, L 3-4, 4-14 This Week: Central Washington, at OSU
The Cougars took advantage of a Sun Devil error to win the first game of the series, 2-1, but fell in the next two contests in Tempe ... WSU junior 3B Brent Robertson scored the winning run in that game. Robertson finished the series hitting .375 (3-for-8) with two runs scored, one RBI and two stolen bases ... The Cougars' 4-3 loss in the second game of the series, diminishes two solid pitching performances by junior RHP Zach Fisher and sophomore RHP Nick Kenyon. Fisher pitched the first 3.1 innings and allowed only one run on two hits, but did walk seven batters. Kenyon pitched the next three innings and gave up two runs on four hits with no walks, but gave up the game-winning home run shot to ASU's Nick Walsh ... Senior RF Mike Knight was a bright spot in the lineup in the final game of the series. He went 3-for-4 with a double and two stolen bases ... Washington State plays a non-conference midweek game with Central Washington, before heading down to take on Oregon State.
