Men's Tennis Closes Regular Season Against Arizona

ON TAP: The Arizona State men's tennis team (9-11, 3-4 Pac-10) will close out their regular season as they travel south to Tucson to battle in-state rival Arizona (12-8, 2-5 Pac-10) on Saturday, April 21 at 12:00 p.m.
LAST TIME AGAINST ARIZONA: The Sun Devils defeated the Wildcats, 5-2 back on February 24 in Tempe. In the first meeting, ASU earned the doubles point by taking all three matches. ASU then collected singles victories on courts 2, 3, 4 and 5 to seal the win, its 11th consecutive win over UA in Tempe.
A LOOK BACK: The Sun Devils suffered two losses last weekend one to No. 4 Stanford (6-1) and the other to No. 26 California (5-2). The Cardinal won five of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches. The Cardinal locked up the win with victories at Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles. Arizona State received victories from Nic Dubey at the No. 2 slot, and Mitchell Bowen and Jarrod Eckermann at No. 2 doubles. Dubey posted his 19th singles win with a hard fought 7-6, 3-6, 7-5 victory over 22nd-ranked K.J. Hippensteel. Against the Golden Bears, Cal swept the ASU in doubles play, earning the team point, as each ASU doubles tandem was defeated by the Golden Bears, 8-4. In singles action, the Sun Devils came up a bit short, winning only two of the singles matches. On the No. 3 court, Mirza Duranovic won the last two sets to defeat Cal's Robert Kowalczyk, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0. ASU freshman Olivier Charroin was the other Devil to notch a victory, defeating Ben Miles on the No. 5 court, 7-6, 6-2.
SUN DEVILS IN THE RANKINGS: Junior Matt Klinger continues in the top-65, checking in at #64. Nic Dubey is just three slots behind Klinger at #67. As a team, Arizona State is ranked 34th. The next team ranking will be released on April 25, while the singles and doubles will be released on April 27.
REGIONAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Parings for the 2001 Men's Tennis Championship will be announced on Thursday, May 3 at 1:00 p.m.
HEAD COACH LOU BELKEN: In his 19th season as head coach, Lou Belken has produced 14 All-Americans, including NCAA singles champion and ATP professional Sargis Sargsian. Belken, the 1999 Pacific-10 Conference Coach of the Year and Region VIII Coach of the Year, has guided the Sun Devils to NCAA postseason berths in nine of the last 13 seasons, including a berth into the NCAA round of 16 in 1999.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Senior Nic Dubey and junior Mirza Duranovic each achieved their 80th career singles victory against LMU ... junior Matt Klinger holds a .690 career winning percentage in singles, recording a 60-27 mark ... Klinger has also tied his career-high with 21 victories ... this is Duranovic's third straight year of reaching at least 20 wins ... Duranovic's team-leading 26 wins is only his second best season as he posted 37 wins his freshman year ... six of ASU's 11 losses have been by just one point ... the dual against fourth-ranked Stanford was Arizona State's 10th dual against a top-25 team this year and the ninth dual against a team ranked in the top-13.
