Cougar Women In Lead at Longhorn Invitational Team Track Championship

April 20, 2001

PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State University women are in the lead while the men are fourth in the five-team Longhorn Invitational Team Track & Field Championship after Friday's competition at the Mike A. Myers Stadium on the University of Texas campus at Austin.

WSU's women's team scored 50 points followed by Louisiana State 34, Rice 29, Texas A&M 6, and Texas 2. The men's team scores after the first day were LSU 43, Texas 25, Texas A&M 24, WSU 20, and Minnesota 12.

'Overall, it was a good performance by the Cougar women,' WSU coach Rick Sloan said. 'The men had a few heartbreaks where we should have scored some points and didn't quite get the job done.'

The Cougar women accumulated 18 points on the one-two finish in the 5,000m race of Anna Blue (17:13.72) and Ryan Gilmore (17:35.08). Casey Lektorich brought home a second place in the javelin at 42.42m/139-2 and Ellannee Richardson was fourth at 39.92m/131-0.

Freshman Shannon Rance scored second in the shot put with an NCAA provisional qualifying and lifetime-best throw of 15.01m/49-3. Andrea Thornton was third at 14.18m/46-6 1/4.

'Probably the best performance of the meet, from our standpoint, as far as a big improvement, was that of Shannon Rance in the shot put,' Sloan said. 'That's a huge improvement for Shannon Rance. She had a good series with another throw of 48-feet and a solid series with good consistency.'

Agneta Rosenblad was third in the long jump at 6.04m/19-9 3/4 but ran a wind-aided school record time of 13.35 in the 100m hurdles, the fourth-fastest time in the prelims and an improved NCAA PQ. Tamara Gulley also qualified for the Saturday final with a wind-aided freshman school record and NCAA PQ time of 13.55.

In other preliminary racing, WSU freshman Bree Skinner advanced in both short sprints. Skinner ran the 100m in 11.95w and the 200m in 24.56w. Erin Reed and Tiffany Giles qualified for the 400m final with times of 55.99 and 56.31, respectively. In the 800m, both Angelita Green (2:14.52) and Hilary Smith (2:17.85) will race in the Saturday final.

Ryan Nichols was the sole winner Friday night for the Cougar men, capturing the javelin with a toss of 64.10m/210-4, just two inches off his season best. Tim Gehring fouled all three throws in the hammer.

Oscar Franco-Parra (15:01.44) finished third and Mark Wicklander (15:02.33) fourth in the 5,000m.

Freshman Anthony Buchanan advanced to the finals of both short sprints, running the second-fastest 100m prelim of 10.45w and clocking in third in the 200m prelim at 21.33w. Anson Henry will also see the 100m final after a prelim time of 10.33w run under 'super' wind conditions (any wind reading over 4 meters per second). Dan Brink narrowly missed the 200m final with his 22.05w time.

'I don't know if Anson will run in the 100m final because he slowed up in the 200m prelims after feeling some tightening in his hamstring,' Sloan said. 'Anthony Buchanan ran well after not having run the last few weeks.'

WSU will have two men in the 110m hurdles final, but one of them is not Arend Watkins. Eric Dudley (14.73w) and Steve Dwyer (14.64w) will run in the Saturday final with Watkins in the stands after being disqualified.

'Arend Watkins, in the first heat, was right with the winner, Kris Allen from Texas A&M, when he started to press because the race was close and he started hitting hurdles,' Sloan said. 'He absolutely destroyed one hurdle and was disqualified for pushing a hurdle over. Steve Dwyer ran a lifetime best and Eric Dudley are in the final so we'll see if we can some good times from those guys.'

Ryan Wieseler missed the 800m final cut by 15/1000s of a second, running 1:54.61. Simon Kamau and Qieed Ishmael were the only two runners not to advance in the 400m final after running 49.83 and 50.40, respectively.

'We have some people going tomorrow and we're looking forward to scoring some good points,' Sloan said. 'We're hopeful that we can score enough points to win the women's side of it. That would be a big feather in our cap. The men, we'll just have to see what we can do and where we can pick up some points.'

Saturday's events begin at 10 a.m. PST.
