Women's Tennis One Win Away From Perfect Regular Season
April 20, 2001
LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford University women's tennis team improved to a perfect 23-0 on the season with a convincing 6-1 road win over 15th-ranked USC (16-7) on Friday afternoon at the Marks Tennis Stadium.
The victory, which does not count in the Pacific-10 Conference standings, is the Cardinal's third over the Women of Troy this season. Stanford beat USC 7-0 in the quarterfinals of the National Team Indoor Championships on February 16 in Madison, Wisconsin, and posted a 7-0 Pac-10 victory on April 7 on The Farm. The 2001 Pac-10 Champion Cardinal can clinch back-to-back undefeated regular seasons when it wraps up the schedule with a non-conference tilt at 32nd-ranked UCLA (6-16) on Saturday at noon.
The Cardinal opened up with a 1-0 lead after sweeping the three doubles matches. Stanford's nationally top-ranked duo of freshman Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge HS) and junior Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL/Boca Raton Prep) aided the cause with an 8-5 win over 12th-ranked Tiffany Brymer and Jewel Peterson at No. 1 doubles.
Stanford then won five of the six singles matches in straight sets to wrap up the victory, and lost two games or fewer in three of those matches. Barnikow, who is ranked 91st in the nation, dropped just one game in dominating Tiffany Brymer 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles. The 10th-ranked Kalvaria overpowered Anita Loyola 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2, while 19th-ranked junior Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV/Reno HS) beat 74th-ranked Maureen Diaz 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3.
