UCLA Women's Tennis Upsets No. 9 Cal, 4-3
April 20, 2001
LOS ANGELES, CA - Catherine Hawley defeated Cals Christina Fusano, 7-6(5), 6-4 at No. 2 singles, lifting the UCLA women's tennis team to a 4-3 upset victory over the No. 9 Golden Bears at the Los Angeles Tennis Center Friday.
With the win, No. 32-ranked UCLA snaps its six-match losing streak and improves to 6-16 overall and 3-3 in Pac-10 play. Cal drops to 14-5 overall and 4-4 in conference action.
The Bruins started the afternoon strong, winning two of three doubles matches to take the one point awarded for doubles play. Lauren Fisher and Petya Marinova won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles and Mariko Fritz-Krockow teamed with Sara Walker, cruising to an 8-0 victory in the No. 2 slot.
With a 1-0 lead heading into singles play, the Bruins needed to win just three of six singles matches to pull off the upset. UCLA did just that, receiving victories from Walker, Fisher and eventually Hawley to clinch the 4-3 upset win. Sekita Grant and Catherine Lynch salvaged their matches at the No. 5 and 6 spots, respectively, both winning in straight sets. Raquel Kops-Jones grabbed the only other point for the Bears in singles, defeating Petya Marinova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
The Bruin's win avenges a 5-2 loss to the Bears back on April 7 in Berkeley. The Bears will take on the No. 15-ranked USC Trojans tomorrow, April 21, at 12 noon.
