Women's Crew Dominates At Redwood Shores
April 21, 2001
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - - The Oregon State women's crew blew past its competition on Saturday at Redwood Shores, Calif., as the Beavers made some adjustments in their rowing and overpowered Stanford in the morning and then San Diego State in the afternoon.
OSU won seven of eight races Saturday, as the varsity eight kicked off the morning with a 12-second win over Stanford. OSU finished the 2,000-meter race in 6:40.6, well ahead of Stanford's 6:52.4.
The second varsity kept up the pressure, as they won by several lengths with a time of 7:01.9 to Stanford's 7:19.7.
The varsity four's time of 7:50.4 was good for a win as well, as Stanford crossed the line in 8:35.3, but the novice eight lost by the nose of a boat, as Stanford pulled out a 7:18.56-7:18.59 win.
The wins by OSU marked a dramatic turnaround for the Beavers, as they had lost to Stanford two weeks ago at the San Diego Crew Classic.
'It was great to come back and beat Stanford today,' OSU coach Charlie Owen said. 'They beat us by quite a bit in San Diego, but we made some improvements and raced well today. We put together the first part of the race very well, and we showed improvement in the areas we've been working on.'
OSU carried its performance over to the afternoon, when it won all four races against San Diego State.
The varsity eight won a tight race to start the afternoon, as they finished in 7:43.2, compared to SDSU's 7:45.4, while the second varsity won in convincing fashion, 7:43.2-8:17.43.
In the novice eight race, OSU rebounded from its earlier heartbreaker to claim a win with a time of 7:48.0, which was 29 seconds faster than SDSU's 8:17.37.
The varsity four rounded out the day with a win in 8:48.2, well ahead of SDSU's 9:25.8.
The stage is now set for OSU's showdown Sunday morning with No. 10 California on Redwood Shores.
'We face Cal on Sunday, and they're a very fast crew,' Owen commented. 'All the OSU crews raced well today though, so I'm very pleased. It's tough to race twice in one day, but we did it well.'
