Duck Men Fall to Seventh at Final Day of U.S. Intercollegiate
April 22, 2001
STANFORD, Calif. -- The 23rd-ranked Oregon men's golf team shot a disappointing 305 Sunday and fell to seventh after the final round of the U.S. Intercollegiate, contested at the 6,786-yard, par-71 Stanford Golf Course. The Ducks entered the final round in second place, just five strokes behind Arizona after sub-par rounds of 283-279, but no Ducks finished in the black numbers Sunday as five squads leapfrogged the Ducks.
No. 18 Arizona cruised to an easy 15-stroke victory with an 837 three-round total (280-277-280), followed by No. 4 Arizona State at 852, UCLA third at 858, No. 6 USC fourth at 859, Stanford fifth at 863 and Pacific sixth at 866, one stroke better than Oregon's 877.
'Obviously, I'm very disappointed,' said Oregon coach Steve Nosler. 'We had a chance to make a statement today, but there were times that we didn't make very good decisions on the course and it really came back to bite us. But we did play very, very well the first two rounds and proved that we can handle this course. We just need to find a way to sustain our momentum beyond the first two rounds when we come back here for the Pac-10 Championships.'
Sophomore John Ellis was Oregon's low finisher, shooting a 2-over 215 (71-68-76) to tie for 20th. Junior Aaron Byers, who was tied for second entering the final round, had a 79 Sunday to finish at 5-over 216 and tied for 23rd. Junior Brandon Harnden was Oregon's low golfer on Sunday, carding a 3-over 74.
The Ducks will look to recapture some of their first and second round magic when they return to the Stanford Golf Course for the Pacific-10 Championships, which begin Friday.
