April 22, 2001
STANFORD, Calif. - Fifth-ranked Stanford University (21-1) won its 70th consecutive home dual match with a 6-1 victory over 18th-ranked USC (13-8) in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Cardinal (21-1) has not lost on its home court since April of 1996.
The match was a make-up of Friday's contest that was rained out, and was the final dual of the regular season for both teams. The Cardinal and Trojans will now travel to the Pacific-10 Conference Individual Championships in Ojai, California this Thursday-Saturday. Stanford is then expected to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, May 12 and Sunday, May 13 at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The pairings and sites for the 64-team NCAA Tournament will be officially announced on Thursday, May 3.
Stanford's senior class of Ali Ansari (Houston, TX/Second Baptist HS), Alex Kim (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill HS) and Scotty Scott (Belvedere, CA/Pinewood HS) all went out in style on Sunday as they played in their final regular season home matches. All three won in both singles and doubles to help improve their career home record to 52-0.
Stanford won two of the three doubles matches to capture the first point, and then captured five of the six singles match to win going away. Ansari prevailed with a 6-3, 7-6 victory over the Trojans' Parker Collins at No. 6, while Scott was a 6-2, 7-6 victor over Ruben Torres at No. 5. Kim, meanwhile, improved to 23-2 on the season by defeating Andrew Park 6-1 in the first set before the Trojan was forced to retire from the match.
The Trojan point came thanks to a straight set win from Ryan Moore at No. 2 singles.
