April 22, 2001

The No. 1-ranked Cal men's varsity eight defeated No. 10 Oregon State by 14 seconds in a dual race on the Redwood Shores Lagoon, April 22. Cal held off an early charge by the Beavers and increased its lead as it navigated the 2000m race course. With the win, Cal, the two-time defending national champion, remains undefeated on the season.

'Both the varsity and JV showed improvement over last week's race,' said coach Steve Gladstone. 'They produced more complete races today.'

With wins in the JV and novice races, cal swept the Beavers in the three men's races contested.

'We had a good race and executed our plan today,' said Cal varsity coxswain varsity coxswain Michael Vallarelli. 'We were satisfied with today's result, but I think we still have another gear.'

The Bears travel to Seattle to take on the Washington Huskies on the Montlake cut, next week. The Huskies are currently ranked at No. 4 and the traditional rivalry always produces exciting racing.
