Men's Swimming Freshmen Make An Impact

April 23, 2001

The Stanford University men's swimming and diving team captured a second place finish at the 2001 NCAA Championships. Skip Kenney's teams have either won or finished as the runner up in 13 of the past 17 seasons, picking up seven team titles along the way. A key to this year's success was the improvement made by the freshman class. The level of improvement by the freshmen made possible some tremendous contributions by the class during the dual meet season as well as at the Pac-10 and NCAA Championship meets.

The Cardinal has two individuals crowned NCAA Champion in 2001 - Adam Messner in the 200 butterfly (1:43.12) and Anthony Robinson in the 50 freestyle (19.15). Stanford picked up a NCAA relay title in the 200 freestyle relay (Randall Bal, Bobby O'Bryan, Jeff Guyman and Anthony Robinson).

Two swimmers placed on the World Championship Team - Anthony Robinson (100 breastroke) and Randall Bal (100 backstroke). Freshman Peter Marshall was placed on the World University Team in the 100 and 200 backstroke.

Anthony Robinson set a new World Record in the 50 meter breastroke at U.S. Nationals as well.

Stanford won its 20th consecutive Pac-10 team title in 2001 and went undefeated during the dual meet season.
