Ducks Climb to Eighth After Pac-10 Second Round

TEMPE, Ariz. - Seniors Jerilyn White and Dawn Berry, shooting a 74 and a 75 respectively Tuesday, helped the Oregon women's golf team climb to eighth place after the second round of the 2001 Pacific-10 Conference women's golf championships, being played at the 6,101-yard, par-72 Karsten Golf Course.

White, who was tied for fourth at even-par entering Tuesday's round, was 2-over on the day and fell to a three-way tie for eighth at 146. The Salem, Ore., native is just four strokes behind tournament leader Natalie Gulbis of Arizona who has a two-day total of 142 following back-to-back 71s.

Lorena Ochoa of Arizona and California teammates Sarah Huarte and Vikki Laing were two strokes back of Gulbis in second at 144, followed by Molly Cooper of Arizona State, Saki Uechi of UCLA and Kelli Kamimura of Washington who were tied for fifth at 145. Arizona State's Jimin Kang and Stanford's Kim Kouwabunpat joined White in eighth.

Arizona State, which shot a 291, and Arizona surged into the second round lead at 10-over 586. Stanford was third at 589. First-round leader California fell to fourth at 590 after compiling a 302 Tuesday. USC held fifth at 594, Washington was sixth at 602 and UCLA was seventh at 605.

Oregon shot a 306 to climb above Oregon State by a stroke at 615. The Beavers' 310 Tuesday left them ninth at 616. Washington State was far back in 10th with a 650.

Berry's round of 75 gave her a two-day total of 154 that was tied for 29th with Duck teammate Claire Hunter, who shot a 5-over 77 for the second straight round. Junior Kathy Cho shot a 79 Tuesday and was tied for 48th at 159, while freshman Lacy Erickson carded a 78 to lift her to 51st place at 160.

White, the No. 35 golfer in the country, has challenged for the Pac-10 title each of the last two years. She finished ninth last year and was sixth as a sophomore in 1999. The highest an Oregon individual has ever finished at the Pac-10 tournament was Karly Mills' tie for fourth in 1995.

The three-day event concludes with the final round beginning at 8:00 a.m. Wednesday.
