April 24, 2001
LOS ANGELES - Tommy Perez slammed two home runs while James Clelland allowed three runs in seven innings of relief and the Loyola Marymount Lions snapped a 14-game losing streak with a 13-7 upset win against the No. 6 USC Trojans. The Lions swept the season series with the non-conference win at George Page Stadium while the Trojans have lost three straight, including two straight to West Coast Conference teams (USC lost yesterday, 10-8, to San Francisco).
Clelland allowed only four hits and picked up his second win of the season against the Trojans.
Perez went 3-for-4 with four RBI as the 4-5-6 hitters in the LMU (16-32) lineup (Perez, Joshua Whitesell and Robert Hirsh) all recorded three hits on the afternoon.
USC (29-16) scored four runs on four singles in the second, but could not hold onto the lead as LMU battled and took the lead in the sixth when Perez hit a triple off the left field wall to score David Maffei. The Lions added four more runs in the eighth to win their first game in the month of April. LMU had not won since March 30.
The 19 hits by the Lions are the most allowed by Trojan pitchers this season.
USC will host UCLA in a Pac-10 Conference series beginning on Friday (April 27) at 6 p.m. at Dedeaux Field. The series will continue on Saturday (April 28) and Sunday (April 29) at 1 p.m. with Sunday's game broadcast live on FOX Sports Net. All three games will be broadcast live on www.usctrojans.com.
