Beavers Win Sixth Straight

April 25, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State pushed its winning streak to six games by beating Portland 13-6 Wednesday afternoon in non-league baseball at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. OSU (27-16 overall, 8-7 Pacific-10) got a hit from everyone in its starting lineup on the way to the Beavers' 18th win in their last 26 games.

Oregon State now takes its longest winning streak of the season to Hawaii for a non-league series with games Friday at 9:30 p.m. PDT, Saturday at 9:30 p.m. PDT and Sunday at 5 p.m. PDT.

On Wednesday against Portland (17-26, 6-15 West Coast), the Beavers took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning and extended it to 8-2 by the end of the fourth inning. Bryan Ingram, Andy Jarvis and Will Hudson had three hits each for OSU and Brian Barden had two hits, including a triple.

Freshman lefthander Jake Postlewait picked up the win as Oregon State used the game to get work for five pitchers. Postlewait pitched four innings, allowing two runs (two earned) on five hits and no walks while striking out two, Craig Hays, Mark McLemore, Corky Wray and Chris Wilkins followed Postlewait to the mound.

'Jake did a nice job in the first start of his career, and we were able to get four more guys some innings,' OSU coach Pat Casey said.

The victory was the second in a five-game week crucial to the Beavers' postseason hopes, after Oregon State had taken a 10-9 win at Portland on Tuesday. OSU is alone in third place in the Pac-10 as the rest of the conference plays its traditional rivalries this weekend.

'We needed to win both of these games, and we did,' Casey said. 'Every game you play out of conference is huge, especially for Pac-10 teams because of the number of games you've got to play within a conference as tough as the Pac-10. It makes all these out-of-conference games all the more important.'

The Beavers picked up three runs on two hits, a walk, a balk and a hit batter against Pilot righthander Jeff Cambers in the second inning. OSU took control with five more runs in the fourth inning, picking up RBI singles by Jarvis, Josh Carter and Hudson as the Beavers sent 10 hitters to the plate.

Oregon State extended the lead to 9-4 with Pat Stevens' run-scoring single in the fifth. OSU made it 12-4 with a three-run sixth that included Ingram's two-run single and Barden's run-scoring triple.

That extended Barden's hitting streak to eight games, during the streak, he's batting .600 (21-for-35) with 2 homers, 1 triple, 5 doubles and 16 RBIs. Barden has had at least two hits in every game of the streak.

Hudson was 3-for-3 with three runs while Ingram and Jarvis were both 3-for-5 and Ingram drove in three runs. Pat Stevens was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs and Josh Carter was 2-for-5 for the Beavers, who had at least 10 hits for the 28th time in 43 games this season and reached the 15-hit mark for the 13th time.

For Portland, Cory Lunde and Travis Hanson were both 3-for-4 and Hanson had two doubles and two RBIs. Brock Griffin added a solo homer for the Pilots in the eighth inning.
