Men's Tennis Competes At The Pac-10 Championships

ON TAP: The Arizona State men's tennis team (10-11, 3-4 Pac-10) will head to Ojai, California to participate in the Pac-10 Championships, April 26-29.
A QUICK LOOK AT PAC-10s: The Sun Devils, who finished tied for fourth in the conference standings, will send six individuals and two doubles teams to Ojai. Competing in the championship draw are Nic Dubey, Matt Klinger, Mirza Duranovic and Pim Van Mele. Freshmen Jarrod Eckermann and Olivier Charroin will play in the Pac-10 individual tournament. The teams of Dubey and Klinger will and Charroin and Van Mele will both play in the doubles championship bracket.
LAST TIME OUT: Behind four singles wins Arizona State completed the series sweep over in-state rival Arizona, 4-3 in Tucson, ASU defeated UA 5-2 earlier this year in Tempe. Arizona earned the early lead by taking two of the three doubles matches for the first point. In an exciting tie-breaker, Nic Dubey and Matt Klinger won the lone doubles match for ASU as they defeated the 36th-raked tandem of Capriati and Hagman, 9-8 (4). In singles action, ASU claimed four of the six singles matches to win the dual, the four singles wins were all straight set victories. Dubey won easily on the No. 1 court where he defeated Capriati, 6-4, 6-2. Klinger then won his match on the No. 2 court with a 7-6 (4), 6-4 over Lloyd. Freshman Olivier Charroin won his match on the No. 5 court, while ASU's other freshman Jarrod Eckermann clinched the dual with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over UA's Aropovic.
SUN DEVILS IN THE RANKINGS: Senior Nic Dubey comes in this week at #64, while junior Matt Klinger is just one behind at #65. The doubles team of Mitchell Bowen and Klinger re-enter at #26. As a team, Arizona State is ranked #31. The next team ranking will be released on May 2, while the singles and doubles will be released on May 4.
REGIONAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Parings for the 2001 Men's Tennis Championship will be announced on Thursday, May 3 at 1:00 p.m.
HEAD COACH LOU BELKEN: In his 19th season as head coach, Lou Belken has produced 14 All-Americans, including NCAA singles champion and ATP professional Sargis Sargsian. Belken, the 1999 Pacific-10 Conference Coach of the Year and Region VIII Coach of the Year, has guided the Sun Devils to NCAA postseason berths in nine of the last 13 seasons, including a berth into the NCAA round of 16 in 1999.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Senior Nic Dubey and junior Mirza Duranovic each achieved their 80th career singles victory against LMU ... junior Matt Klinger holds a .693 career winning percentage in singles, recording a 61-27 mark ... Klinger also set a career-high with 22 victories ... this is Duranovic's third straight year of reaching at least 20 wins ... Duranovic's team-leading 26 wins is only his second best season as he posted 37 wins his freshman year ... six of ASU's 11 losses have been by just one point ... 10 of ASU's 21 duals were against top-25 teams this year, while nine duals were against team's ranked in the top-13.
