Stanford's Grant Robison Wins 5,000 Meters at Penn Relays

Philadelphia, Pa - Grant Robison, a redshirt freshman from San Angelo, Tx, captured the 5,000 meter title Thursday night at the prestigious Penn Relays.

Robison, who returned to Stanford after spending two years on a Mormon mission, edged out Kenneth Svendsen of North Carolina Charlotte in a career-best time of 13:57.01. Svendsen was timed in 13:58.61.

Robison's time met the NCAA provisional standard, and is fifth-best for a freshman in school history.

The Stanford distance medley relay team of Sally Glynn, Jayna Smith, Lindsay Hyatt and Lauren Fleshman finished second to the University of North Carolina also during Thursday's activities at the Penn Relays.

The Cardinal was timed in 11:15.07 compared to 11:03.52 for the Tarheels.

Glynn ran the first leg (1,200 meters) of the DMR in a time of 3:26.9 compared to UNC's leadoff runner Beth George at 3:26.4. Smith ran the next leg, the 400 meters, and was timed in 53.2 compared to a time of 53.3 for UNC's Edi Ntuen.

Hyatt then ran the 800 meters in 2:09.7 compared to a time of 2:09.5 by Alice Schmidt in 2:09.5.

Shalane Flanagan sealed the win for North Carolina with a time of 4:34.3 in the 1,600 meters compared to 4:45.3 by Stanford's Fleshman.

In other events involving Stanford athletes on Thursday, freshman Jill Camarena finished fourth in the shot put (49-8 1/4, 15.14m). Cleopatra Borel of Maryland/Baltimore County won the event at 53-1 1/2 (16.19m). Camarena later placed ninth in the discus at 140-10 (42.92m). Tammy Pullein of Rutgers won the event at 161-10 (49.32m). Allison Beatty placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 149-4 (45.52m). Brooke Freeburg of Providence won top honors at 158-2 (48.20m). Maureen Onyagbako finished in seventh place in the hammer at 162-7 (49.56m). Maureen Griffin of Idaho State won the event with a throw of 205-4 (62.58m).
