Walker, Fisher Advance at Pac-10 Championships

Walker, the defending Pac-10 singles champion, started the day with a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Stanford's Sara Pestieau in the first round. In her afternoon match, she defeated ASU's Mhairi Brown, 6-2, 7-5, setting up a quarterfinal showdown with Washington's Claire Carter on Friday.
Fisher, playing in her first Pac-10 Championship, defeated Stanford's Lauren Barnikow, 7-6(3), 6-3 in the first round. She needed three sets to knock off Washington State's Erica Perkins, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in her second match of the day. She will take on USC's Maureen Diaz in Friday's quarterfinals.
Two Bruins that didn't advance in Thursday's main draw included Catherine Hawley and Petya Marinova. Hawley fell 6-2, 6-0 to Cal's Christina Fusano in the first round, while Marinova pulled out of the singles draw in order to rest and concentrate on doubles with Fisher.
In the Pac-10 Invitational draw, Mariko Fritz-Krockow defeated Washington State's Tamara Filipovic, 7-6, 6-0 in the first round. Washington's Erin Hoe, however, knocked her out in the second round, 6-3, 6-1. Jennifer Donahue, Chelsea Godbey and Michelle Stiefel all dropped first round matches in the Pac-10 Invitational draw on Thursday.
Singles play continues on Friday with doubles play beginning in the afternoon.
