April 27, 2001

LOS ANGELES -- Mark Prior struck out 14 batters without allowing a walk in a complete game effort Friday and the No. 6 USC Trojans defeated the UCLA Bruins, 2-0, in Pac-10 Conference action at Dedeaux Field. The win, coupled with a 7-4 loss by Stanford against California, pushes the Trojans into a first-place tie with the Cardinal in conference play.

Prior (12-1) threw his third shutout and fifth complete game in six Pac-10 starts, improving to 6-0 in conference play for USC (30-16, 11-5).

UCLA (25-18, 6-7) also received a pitching gem from Paul Diaz (3-1), who went 7 2/3 innings and allowed only two runs on six hits.

Brian Barre led off the game for the Trojans with a shot to right field that Ben Francisco was unable to handle. Barre advanced to second on a Diaz wild pitch and moved to third on a groundout by Seth Davidson. Diaz was called for a balk, allowing Barre to score the first run of the game.

In the third inning, Davidson hit his first home run of the season to right to complete the scoring.

Prior got out of some situations during the game. With runners at first and second in the fourth inning with no outs, he struck out Francisco and John Campanella before retiring Josh Arhart on a groundout to end the inning.

In the sixth with runners at first and third with one out, Prior got Francisco to ground out into a 5-4-3 double play to end another threat.

Brian Baron was 2-for-4 on the game. His average remains at .480, and he extends his hitting streak tonine games. Josh Canales was 1-for-4 and extends his hitting streak to 10 games, the longest on the team.

USC will resume its series with UCLA tomorrow at 1 p.m. with the finale on Sunday (April 29), also at 1 p.m. The games will be broadcast live on the Internet at www.uclabruins.com.
