No. 4 Softball Falls to No. 2 UCLA, 2-0
April 27, 2001
LOS ANGELES, CA - The No. 4 California Golden Bears fell to the No. 2 UCLA Bruins for their third-straight Pac-10 loss, 2-0. With the loss, the Bears fall to 47-9 overall and 4-8 in the Pac-10, while the Bruins improve to 47-4 overall, 8-4 in conference.
UCLA's Keira Goerl walked three Bears to load the bases in the first, but a fielder's choice groundout with two outs ended the Cal scoring threat.
In the first for UCLA, Natasha Watley lined a base hit to senior Nicole DiSalvio in the circle, and when DiSalvio turned to throw to first, the ball went up the first base line, allowing Watley to move all the way around to third. DiSalvio walked the next batter who later stole second to put Bruins at second and third. The next batter lined out to sophomore Veronica Nelson at first for the first out in the inning, but a walk to Stacey Nuveman loaded the bases. Claire Sua grounded out to sophomore Eryn Manahan at second, allowing Watley to score from third. The first inning then ended with UCLA up, 1-0, when Courtney Dale grounded to senior Paige Bowie at shortstop who had to go up the middle to get the ball and throw on to Nelson for the out.
Junior Candace Harper singled up the middle with two outs in the sixth for the Bears first hit in the game. Nelson followed with a single through the left side, giving Cal runners on second and third, but a Bowie groundout back to the pitcher ended the Bears scoring threat.
Nuveman gave the Bruins an insurance run in the sixth, hitting her 14th home run on the year over the right-field fence.
DiSalvio pitched well once again, but was forced to take the loss, allowing just two runs on five hits in six innings. She falls to 17-4 on the year.
Goerl went the distance for the Bruins, improving to 19-1 in the 2001.
The Bears return to action when they head north to take on the No. 13 Washington Huskies, Saturday and Sunday, with Saturday's game to start at 2 p.m. and Sunday's to start at 1 p.m.
