April 28, 2001
The University of Arizona men's 4x400m and women's distance medley relay teams each had outstanding performances Friday at the 92nd annual Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
The women's DMR of freshman Beth Hoge, sophomore Teresa Frierson, junior Danielle Price and senior Erin Doherty shattered the school record in the event by finishing third in the race in 11 minutes, 20.13 seconds.
Their time eclipsed that of Virginia Camacho, Allison Dring, Karen Bennett and Ana Colonna. That DMR ran 11:28.54 on April 24, 1989, at the Drake Relays, as well.
The men's 4x400m relay team easily won its qualifying heat and advanced to Saturday's final. The team of sophomore Matt Lea, senior Mike Kenyon, senior Keith Varga and junior Jules Doumbya ran 3:07.42, which ties them for the fourth fastest time in school history.
Doumbya, meanwhile, had the best individual performance of the meet for the Wildcats. He ran a season-best time of 51.20 in the heats of the 400m hurdles Thursday. His time is also the No. 4 time in school history and an NCAA provisional qualifying performance. Saturday, Doumbya finished fifth in the event s final, running 52.42.
Senior Rori Kelly won her heat of the 100m hurdles Friday. She ran 13.92 and advanced to Saturday's final in the event.
The Wildcats conclude competition at the meet Saturday. The team then travels to Tempe, Ariz., May 5 for the annual intrastate dual meet with Arizona State and Northern Arizona.
