Baseball Loses Pair Against Rival Washington, 15-8 and 8-6

April 28, 2001

PULLMAN - The Cougar baseball team was able to avoid the rain Saturday but did not have much better luck against the Washington Huskies' lineup as WSU's cross-state rival took both games of the day, winning the first game 15-8 and the second game by a score of 8-6. When all was said and done, the Cougars dropped to 14-29 overall (5-12 in Pac-10) while Washington improved to 24-14 (5-9)

After play was resumed following Friday's suspension of play, the two teams completed the first game without any major offensive production from either side until the Huskies scored eight runs in the eighth inning, including a grand slam by left fielder Jay Garthwaite to give Washington a nine-run lead heading into the bottom of the inning.

The Cougs rallied to score two in their half of the eighth as Richard Hall and Jon Baeder teamed to hit consecutive RBI singles to score Stefan Bailie and Garrett Alwert to cut Washington's lead to seven runs.

The first inning of the game Friday night saw WSU jump out to an early 4-0 lead as the first four hitters collected hits, including Mike Knight's first of two doubles in the game and Bailie's 14th home run of the year, this time a three-run blast over the center field fence that plated Evan Hecker and Bookie Gates.

The Huskies took advantage of eight Cougar errors throughout the game, with two occurring in the fifth and two more in the eighth as Washington scored a combined 13 runs in those two innings.

In the second game of the day, WSU once again jumped ahead early as they took a 3-0 lead into the fourth inning. Gates drove in Knight with a single to left-center field to start the scoring and Alwert put one more run on the scoreboard with a double that scored Gates for a two-run Cougar advantage. Bailie drove in Hecker on a ground-out but the run put the Cougs up by three runs

Washington answered with four runs in the fourth inning, but WSU tied the game in their half of the fourth as Baeder scored Brent Robertson with a sacrifice fly after Robertson reached on an error to lead off the inning.

The Huskies score another run in the fifth, but Alwert, the Cougars' starting pitcher and designated hitter, tied the game once again in the sixth with a home run that rocketed off his bat and easily cleared the right field fence for his first homer of his WSU career.

The eighth inning once again proved to be the Achilles' heel for the Cougars, as Washington broke the game open by scoring three runs off Alwert before he was relieved by Donny Davis with two outs. Alwert lasted seven and two-third innings and gave eight runs on 13 hits while striking out two and faced the minimum number of hitters through the first 10 outs of the game.

The final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 p.m. at Bailey-Brayton Field.
