Beavers Winning Streak Ends

April 28, 2001

HONOLULU, Hawaii - Brian Barden extended his hitting streak to nine games Friday night but Oregon State's winning streak ended at six games with a 7-3 loss to Hawai'i in non-league baseball at Rainbow Stadium. The Beavers (27-17 overall, 8-7 Pacific-10) have won 19 of their last 28 games despite the loss.

OSU and Hawai'i (21-23, 10-17 Western Athletic) meet again Saturday at 9:30 p.m. PDT and conclude their series Sunday at 5 p.m. PDT. Both games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).

On Friday, Barden had a run-scoring single in the fourth inning and added a solo homer to centerfield to lead off the ninth inning, his eighth homer of the season. During his nine-game streak, Barden is batting .605 (23-for-38) with 3 homers, 1 triple, 5 doubles and 18 runs batted in, he has at least two hits in every game of the streak.

The Beavers, playing their sixth game in eight days, were forced to alter their weekend pitching rotation because their usual Friday starter, Thad Johnson, had pitched in relief on Tuesday. OSU turned to Stephen Copeland for the opener against the Rainbows and Copeland turned in a complete game in his third start of the season.

Copeland allowed 13 hits and managed to scatter most of those, but six came in the Rainbows' four-run fifth inning. He walked two and struck out six as his record fell to 3-2.

Hawai'i took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. After a walk, a hit and a wild pitch to start the inning, Copeland struck out the next two batters but Danny Kimura drove a two-run single to leftfield.

The Rainbows tried to add to their lead in the second inning when Kevin Gilbride tried to score from second on Lane Nogawa's single through the right side, but OSU's relay from rightfielder Josh Carter to first baseman Andy Jarvis to catcher Bryan Ingram was in time to nail Gilbride.

OSU cut the gap to 2-1 in the fourth inning as Eric Stark walked, Ingram sarificed him to second and was safe himself on an error, and Barden lined a single down the leftfield line to drive in Stark. With one out, a passed ball moved the runners to second and third but the Beavers couldn't plate another run.

Hawai'i then came up with its four-run fifth inning to go up 6-1, and the Rainbows added a run in the eighth. After the Beavers got within 7-2 on Barden's homer to start the ninth, pinch-hitter Curtis Davis doubled, was balked to third and scored on a wild pitch.

Righthander Jeff Coleman pitched the win for the Rainbows, going eight innings and allowing one run on one hit and four walks while striking out eight.
