Bruins Guaranteed Championship in Ojai

April 28, 2001

Ojai, Calif. - No matter what happens in Sunday's women's doubles final at the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, one thing's for certain - UCLA will take home the title. The only question is which Bruin team will be the first UCLA tandem to win a Pac-10 doubles title since Keri Phebus and Paige Yaroshuk accomplished the feat in 1996.

UCLA's No. 1 team of Lauren Fisher and Petya Marinova cruised past ASU's Mhairi Brown/Celena McCoury, 8-1 in one of Saturday's semifinals. In the other half of the draw, the Bruin team of Mariko Fritz-Krockow and Sara Walker defeated Debbie Larocque/Laresa Marino of Arizona, 8-4.

In singles action, Walker came up just short in her attempt to win a second straight Pac-10 title, falling to ASU's Adria Engel, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. Instead, Engel will face Raquel Kops-Jones of Cal in Sunday's final.
