Bullpen Holds In Baseball's 7-6 Win Against UCLA
April 28, 2001
LOS ANGELES -- Brian Bannister and Fraser Dizard combined to throw 3 2/3 scoreless innings Saturday and the No. 6 USC Trojans held on to a 7-6 win against the UCLA Bruins in Pac-10 Conference action at Dedeaux Field. With the win, the Trojans moved into first place, one game ahead of Stanford as the Cardinal lost, 4-0, today at California.
Dizard retired all four batters he faced to pick up his sixth save of the season for the Trojans (31-16, 12-5). Rik Currier (9-1) struck out a season-high 10 batters to pick up the win while Doug Silva (2-4) took the loss for the Bruins (25-19, 6-8).
UCLA got off to a quick start when Josh Canales hit the first pitch by Currier off the wall in left for a triple. He scored on a sacrifice fly to right by center fielder Matt Pearl for an early 1-0 lead. Canales went 4-for-5 on the afternoon with two RBI.
USC answered when Brian Barre led off with his eighth homer of the season. It was the third time this season that Barre has led off the first with a home run.
The Trojans scored three in the second to take a 4-1 lead. With the bases loaded and one out, Seth Davidson hit a ground ball to UCLA second baseman Randall Shelley. Shelley turned the first part of a possible double play, but the throw from Canales was a short hop, allowing Davidson to reach safely. Anthony Lunetta and Alberto Concepcion hit back-to-back RBI singles to complete the scoring.
Davidson walked and Lunetta was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the third to give USC a 6-1 lead.
The Bruins, however, rallied with four runs in the sixth on two-run singles by Canales and right fielder Ben Francisco to chase Currier.
Dizard came into the eighth with two outs and a runner on first. He got Brian Baron, one of the nation's top hitters, to pop up to short on the first pitch to end the inning.
USC will conclude its series with UCLA tomorrow at 1 p.m. with a live broadcast on FOX Sports Net. The games will be broadcast live on the Internet at www.usctrojans.com.
