Huskies and Bears Split in Dual Regatta
April 28, 2001
Seattle - California extended its streak to three in a row in the men's varsity eight competition and the Washington women swept all four of its races in the annual dual regatta between the Huskies and the Bears Saturday on the Montlake Cut.
The two-time defending national champion Cal men's varsity claimed the Schoch Cup for the third year in a row when it covered the 2,000-meter Montlake Cut course in a time of 5 minutes, 48.5 seconds, ahead of Washington at 5:57.7. The Cup is named after Husky oarsman Delos Schoch, who rowed at Washington from 1934-36. The dual between the Huskies and Bears, which was first held in 1903, is the oldest sporting rivalry on the west coast. Washington has claimed 64 victories in the annual home-and-home challenge, while California now claims 26 wins.
'Cal has great natural athletes in their boat, all eight rowers and their coxswain,' said UW coxswain Tim Lewis. 'They are going to be extremely tough to beat or to even row all the way down the course with, but we are going to give it our best shot every time we race against them. We're not going to hold our heads down and sulk about losing to a bunch of Olympians and great athletes.'
Washington has dominated the women's dual with California, winning its 11th-straight and19th overall in the series that began in 1977. The Husky women's varsity eight battled choppy water over its last 500 meters created by a pleasure boat that went through the Cut ahead of the race and created a wake, but it didn't slow the UW crew as it crossed at 6:39.2, open water ahead of California at 6:46.4.
Washington's junior varsity women won for the ninth consecutive year, in a time of 6:50.5, about six seats ahead of California at 6:52.7. The novice women's eight, made up of four rowers who earlier in the day won the varsity four race, won easily, in 7:01.5, well ahead of the Bears at 7:17.9. The all-novice varsity four won its race in 7:26.2, ahead of UW's second boat at 7:32.9 and Cal at 7:42.0.
The Husky freshman men's eight earned its second win of the season over Cal, following its victory at the San Diego Crew Classic in early April, with a convincing mark of 5:52.2, while the Bears crossed at 5:57.6. Cal avenged its loss to the Husky junior varsity though, winning the dual with a time of 5:52.9, a length and one-half ahead of the Huskies at 5:57.2. Cal picked up its third victory of the day in the varsity four, with a winning time of 6:34.6 to Washington's 6:42.4.
Washington now gears up for the 15th annual Windermere Cup, May 5 on the Montlake Cut. Competition this year features the Croatian men's eight that won a bronze medal at the 2000 Olympics, the Romanian women's national team and the University of Victoria. Racing begins at 10 a.m. on the Cut.
