Husky Men's Golfers Climb to Third at Pac-10s

April 28, 2001

Stanford, CA - The Washington men's golf team shot the second-best score during the third round of the Pac-10 Championships to move into a tie with Arizona State for third place. The Huskies and Sun Devils, at 1058, are just seven strokes behind tournament leader USC (1051) and five strokes in back of second-place Arizona (1053).

For the second straight round, the Huskies were led by Spokane freshman Corey Prugh, who shot 67 on Saturday at the par-71, 6,786-yard Stanford Golf Course. That score equaled his career best, which he set in the second round of the tournament. Prugh is tied for fifth place with a 7-under score of 206.

Prugh's 206 would rank as the best score in Washington history if the Pac-10s were only a 54-hole tournament. Former Husky Troy Kelly holds the best three-round tournament in UW history, a 208 he shot in 1999, also on a par-71 course.

Arizona's Rick Barnes continues to hold down the top spot on the leaderboard with a 13-under par 200. Three players are only four strokes back at 204: USC's Hunter Mahan, Arizona State's Matt Jones and Arizona's Chris Nallen.

Washington freshman Brock Mackenzie posted his second straight round of 72 to hold down 13th place with a 1-under score of 212. Freshman Joey Ramos shot 70 on Saturday while sophomore Derek Berg carded a 73. Both players are tied for 16th at even-par 213. John Robertson became the fifth Husky player to shoot a sub-70 round when he fired a 69 to bring his three day total to 215. Robertson, a sophomore, is in 24th place. Sophomore Conner Robbins shot 74 to finish 44th with a score of 222.

The tournament conclude Sunday with tee times beginning at 8 a.m. at the Stanford Golf Course.
