No. 9 Softball Shut Out By No. 14 Oregon State, 2-0
April 28, 2001
TEMPE, Ariz. - Five straight hits to left field in the first inning scored both runs as 14th-ranked Oregon State (37-18-1, 6-7 Pac-10) shut out ninth-ranked Arizona State (31-16, 6-8 Pac-10), 2-0 tonight at Farrington Stadium.
After left fielder Jennifer Forner made a diving catch in foul ground for the first out, OSU reeled off five consecutive singles off ASU starter Erica Beach (14-8). Michelle Chariton got the first hit, followed by singles from Clare Burnum and Shawna Feldt. Shelly Prochaska then singled in Chariton for the first run, while Steph Adams singled in Burnam for the last run.
Beach kept the Beavers in check the rest of the game and would not give up another hit until the seventh inning.
In the fourth inning, ASU had its chance to score. Back to back singles from Kara Brun and Phelan Wright were not enough as the next three batters failed to get another hit off OSU's Crystal Draper (23-9).
The game lasted only one hour and thirty minutes with each team collecting six hits each and stranded seven runners each. Brun and Wright, who drilled her second triple of the year, had two hits apiece with Missy Hixon and Erin Wardein getting the other two hits.
Up next, Arizona State and Oregon State will close out the series with a single game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
