Top Ranked Arizona Hands Oregon Softball 8-0 Loss
April 28, 2001
TUCSON, Ariz. -- The University of Oregon softball team (25-32 overall, 1-13 Pac-10) faced the top ranked team in the nation for the second time in as many weeks and dropped an 8-0 decision to No. 1 Arizona at Hillenbrand stadium in Tucson, Ariz., Saturday evening. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 50-4, 12-2 and extended their home winning streak to 40 games.
'Again, we were able to get hits and put runners on base,' Oregon head coach Rick Gamez said. 'But we needed to continue to get hits with runners in scoring position and we didn't do that.'
The Ducks had Arizona pitcher Jennie Finch (23-0) in a jam in the top of the sixth inning when they loaded the bases after a hit by sophomore Alyssa Laux, a walk by catcher Missy Coe and a single by Triawn Custer. But Finch got control of the situation, striking out Janell Bergstrom to end the inning.
Arizona took an early lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first and four in the second. In the bottom of the sixth, a single by Finch scored Arizona's eighth run and ended the game because of the eight run mercy rule.
Oregon sophomore Andrea Vidlund (9-8) took the loss for Oregon. The two teams will rematch tomorrow at 1 p.m.
