UCLA Loses 7-6 To No. 6 USC In Pac-10 Action

LOS ANGELES - Brian Bannister and Fraser Dizard combined to throw 3 2/3scoreless innings Saturday and the No. 6 USC Trojans held on to a 7-6 winagainst the UCLA Bruins in Pac-10 Conference action at Dedeaux Field. Withthe win, the Trojans moved into first place, one game ahead of Stanford asthe Cardinal lost, 4-0, today at California.
Dizard retired all four batters he faced to pick up his sixth save of theseason for the Trojans (31-16, 12-5). Rik Currier (9-1) struck out aseason-high 10 batters to pick up the win while Doug Silva (2-4) took theloss for the Bruins (25-19, 6-8).
UCLA got off to a quick start when Josh Canales hit the first pitch byCurrier off the wall in left for a triple. He scored on a sacrifice fly toright by center fielder Matt Pearl for an early 1-0 lead. Canales went4-for-5 on the afternoon with two RBI.
USC answered when Brian Barre led off with his eighth homer of the season. It was the third time this season that Barre has led off the first with ahome run.
The Trojans scored three in the second to take a 4-1 lead. With the basesloaded and one out, Seth Davidson hit a ground ball to UCLA second basemanRandall Shelley. Shelley turned the first part of a possible double play,but the throw from Canales was a short hop, allowing Davidson to reachsafely. Anthony Lunetta and Alberto Concepcion hit back-to-back RBIsingles to complete the scoring.
Davidson walked and Lunetta was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded inthe third to give USC a 6-1 lead.
The Bruins, however, rallied with four runs in the sixth on two-runsingles by Canales and right fielder Ben Francisco to chase Currier.
Dizard came into the eighth with two outs and a runner on first. He gotBrian Baron, one of the nation's top hitters, to pop up to short on thefirst pitch to end the inning.
USC will conclude its series with UCLA tomorrow at 1 p.m. with a livebroadcast on FOX Sports Net. The games will be broadcast live on theInternet at www.usctrojans.com.
