Women's Crew Battles Elements, WSU On Lake Vancouver
April 28, 2001
VANCOUVER, Wash. - - The weather didn't cooperate for Saturday's women's crew meet between Oregon State and Washington State on Lake Vancouver, but that didn't stop the two crews from putting on a fine show of racing, though three races had to be cancelled.
Neither varsity eight boat could gain much separation over the course's 2,000 meters, but Washington State was able to open enough of a lead to claim the win in 6:49.3, just ahead of the Beavers' 6:53.6.
OSU head coach Charlie Owen was pleased with the way his crews handled the wind, rain, hail, and lightning that forced delays in the racing throughout the morning, as well as with how they competed.
'We responded pretty well,' Owen commented. 'We raced well today, but we just didn't come out on top as we would have liked. Washington State beat us by a substantial margin in San Diego a few weeks ago, so we've definitely shown some improvement. I'm confident we can build on today's race and continue to improve going into Pac-10s in two weeks.'
The varsity four was victorious with a time of 8:00.3, edging WSU's 8:06.0, as was the novice eight with a time of 7:31.8.
OSU's second varsity eight gave WSU a good run, but its time of 8:20.1 couldn't top WSU's 8:07.3. OSU's `B' boat finished in 9:14.8. The second varsity eights faced the roughest conditions of the day, battling strong headwinds and driving rain.
'They handled that headwind well,' Owen said of the second varsity. 'They had the worst conditions of the day, and they showed improvements at the same time.'
OSU's second novice eight pulled away for a 27-second win, as they cruised to a time of 7:31.8.
The men also sported a varsity four on Saturday, and the Beavers came away with a 23-second win over WSU with their time of 7:31.7.
OSU rows next in the Pacific-10 Conference Championships in Sacramento, Calif., on May 13.
