Women's Rowing Captures Inaugural Winchell Cup at Oregon State
April 28, 2001
VANCOUVER, Wash. - Washington State University's women's rowing squad won the inaugural Winchell Cup in harsh conditions Saturday against PAC-10 rival Oregon State University.
Thunder and lightning caused the regatta to be delayed and eventually cancelled three races including the novice eight contest.
WSU's No. 20 ranked varsity eight squad defeated OSU, 6:49.3 to 6:53.6. The second varsity eight battled a strong headwind and pouring rain to row a time of 8:07.4, beating OSU's A boat with a time of 8:20.2, and the B boat's 9:14.9.
Oregon State went on to win the varsity four competition with a time of 8:00.3 to Washington State's 8:06.0, and also the second novice eight race at a time of 7:31.8 to 7:58.9.
'Overall, it was a really crazy day,' said novice head coach Jodi Winchell. 'But we are bringing the Winchell Cup back to Pullman.'
Washington State and Oregon State debuted the Winchell Cup in honor of novice head coach Jodi Winchell, who will be retiring after nine year at WSU.
The Cougars will next compete Saturday, May 5 in the Windermere Opening Day Regatta at Montlake Cut in Seattle
